There are a number of things you should do to properly protect your computer.

Ensure that your computer is up-to-date with the latest security patches from software vendors like Microsoft, Apple, Adobe (Reader and Flash), Java, etc.
Install and keep up-to-date the latest antivirus signatures from the product vendor.
